KARIM ADDUCHI Interview x MBC News - Fashion Network Scoop Africa
This entrepreneurial story is about Karim, one of the greatest talents in the fashion world and now present at Paris Fashion Week.
The Paris Fashion Week has started again, and what a spectacle it is. The event is held at various locations in the city and is considered the most prestigious of the four largest fashion shows in the world.
The biggest ones will show their new collection during the event. From the Netherlands we are represented by, among others, a great talent: Karim Adduchi . Karim is a unique and emerging entrepreneur, but also someone with a life story that is worth telling. During the Paris Fashion Week he presents his new collection, a collection that is an ode to his past: the Berber women from Morocco. And his story is also unique in his past. His past has an impact on his work, and his work ensures that everyone wants to talk to him and that he can be found in every renowned fashion magazine.
Karim was born in a tailor family in Morocco. He grew up among the seamstresses in his parents' company. However, his father left for Barcelona when Karim was still young, because the money that was earned in Morocco could not support the family. The rest of the family remained in Morocco. Not long after, however, the then young Karim went to live with his father. The Tamazight-speaking Karim went to school in Spain without speaking a word of Spanish. He used drawings to express himself to others. His teacher was impressed and came up with the idea of sending him to Cal'Oller institution, to have him develop some sort of essential human language. A language that makes communication possible without words or context. Karim became increasingly aware of the impact of what he did and his work also started to stand out in the Netherlands. As a result, he was brought to the Netherlands in 2010 to study at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. During the graduation show at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, he soon became a public favorite. With his collection 'She Knows Why The Caged Birds Sings' he is also noticed abroad. It doesn't stop there, because after obtaining his diploma he achieves success after success. In 2018 he wins theAmsterdam Cultural Business Award and is mentioned by Forbes in the list of 30 personalities to follow .
You may be wondering now, what makes Karim a unique entrepreneur? What can we learn from him? According to Karim himself, the most important thing lies in the non-occurrence of the word 'impossible' in his dictionary. Impossible does not exist, nor does failure exist. You should see failure as something that has failed, you learn from it and do better next time. That drive is mainly inspired by what he likes to do most: amaze people with fashion. In all the years behind him, he earned no money, had no customers, and didn't want to write a single magazine about him. But he continued to work on the dream, the wonder of people with fashion, because 'impossible' does not exist.
Another reason for success, however you want to define success, is to surround yourself with people who are better and smarter in certain areas. That way you can listen to ideas that are not yours, but might be good. Where necessary, you can incorporate those ideas into shaping your own work. Also make sure that you have people around you who can do things that you cannot or do not want to do. Success is rarely the story of one person and most of them would not have reached where they are without others.
